Star Wars The Clone Wars - Missing in Action Review - HIDVDS.COM

→ January 5, 2013

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

This was the 100th episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a milestone for any TV show and one I’m happy to see this great series achieve. That being said, man, I wish it weren’t in the middle of this storyline, which has been quite a struggle to get through.

At first, this looked to be more of the same, with would-be humorous moments that didn’t work - not to mention the low point of Gascon eating garbage, which was actually pretty disgusting, especially in the midst of Star Wars.

Thankfully though, things picked up and “Missing in Action” ended up being the best episode of this storyline so far, thanks to the inclusion of Gregor. The idea of the amnesiac Clone Trooper (a Republic Commando, no less) living the life of a dishwasher, unaware of his true identity, was compelling – even as it was less than ideal to have Gregor introduced and come to realize who he was in the midst of the tired Gascon and WAC routine.

It was hard not to imagine a completely different four part storyline where R2-D2 and his fellow Astromechs -- with no Gascon and WAC present --find Gregor and we get a true focus on him and his history over several weeks, rather than him getting the spotlight in this one episode. But as rushed as his story was, disney dvd release, it was still effective see Gregor take on those Battle Droids on his own, with Kevin Kiner’s excellent score giving the proper weight to his last stand, as he drew the Droids’ fire, allowing his companions to escape.

That being said, it was odd to have so much ambiguity on Gregor’s fate. That sequence played so much like a true “going down fighting” moment (and was so well done in that regard), it was odd to then have an explosion mask Gregor’s actual fate – and to have Gascon's, “We will watch for your return” line indicate maybe, phone shop tv series, just maybe, he made it out.

As with the last couple of episodes, I have to give credit where its due for the rarity of Gascon and WAC delivering truly funny material and say that I did laugh at WAC pulling the quick, “Okay!” and running off when Gascon said, “Save yourselves”! And as we hit episode 100, this series continues to fire on all cylinders artistically. The animation was top notch throughout "Missing in Action," from specific little details like trash blowing by on the streets as the characters spoke to one another, to the cool action as Gregor leapt about, taking down Battle Droids.

Just one more week of this storyline… We can do this, Clone Warriors! The show is worth it. Here's hoping the next time Republic Commandos are on this series, it's Gascon and WAC-free.
