Above is a video trailer that Universal Studios Home Entertainment began showing two weeks ago, at the end of June, which closes by announcing that on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 - the same date in the future which Doc Brown, Marty and Jennifer traveled to in the second theatrical film - the studio will release their Back to the Future: 30th Anniversary Trilogy gift set. The video also mentions, briefly, that "also available, for a limited time: The Complete Adventures...all 3 films, 26 TV episodes, 64 page book." And, while that text is on-screen, it's next to a package designed to look like the Flux Capacitor that gives the famous DeLorean it's time-travel capability. Today, however, Universal has formally issued a press release, announcing that Tuesday, October 20th is the day that retail stores will get those two titles, and a third as well:
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment celebrates this once-in-a-lifetime date, as well as the 30th Anniversary of the groundbreaking first film, with three new releases debuting on October 20, 2015. Available on Blu-ray & DVD, the Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy will include all three movies plus a new bonus disc with more two hours of content. Back to the Future: The Complete Animated Series will be released for the first time ever on DVD featuring all 26 episodes from the award-winning series and Back to the Future: The Complete Adventures will include all three movies, the complete animated series, a new bonus disc, a 64-page book and collectible light-up "Flux Capacitor" packaging. Featuring more than two hours of content, the bonus disc will include all-new original shorts, documentaries, two episodes from the animated series and more.
So, what happened to the 21st? The studio is doing something slightly different on that memorable date:
In addition to the home entertainment release, the Back to the Future celebration continues in theaters when the films go back to the big screen on October 21, 2015. Check local listings for show times. Additionally, Universal Music Enterprises is reissuing an all-new 30th Anniversary picture disc vinyl soundtrack, available October 16th in stores...
Seeing them on the big screen...that's huge, both for those who haven't seen these films in theaters before, and for fans who haven't seen the movies that way for decades. But what about the small screen? After all, this site is for TV Shows, right? Right! So, without further delay, let's talk about the long-awaited DVD debut on October 20th of Back to the Future - The Complete Animated Series:
It's about time! The adventures continue with all 26 episodes of the award winning Back to the Future: The Complete Animated Series, in its entirety, and uncut! Join Marty McFly and Doc Brown, Doc's wife Clara, sons Jules and Verne, and dog Einstein for more hilarious escapades as they time travel to Prehistoric Hill Valley, Ancient Rome, Medieval England, the Civil War, the days of the pirates, the far future and beyond.
Featuring live action segments with Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, science experiments by Bill Nye the Science Guy and the vocal talents of Mary Steenburgen (Clara), Thomas Wilson (Biff) and Dan Castellaneta (Doc), it is family entertainment at its best and a true treasure for all Back to the Future fans!
The 4-disc set of Back to the Future - The Complete Animated Series will be made in DVD format only, and cost $49.98 SRP. It's presented in the original "full-frame" 1.33:1 aspect ratio, with English 2.0 Stereo sound and English subtitles. The 13 episodes from the first season are on discs 1 and 2, and the 13 episodes from the second (and final) season are on discs 3 and 4. As mentioned in the studio description quoted above, all episodes are uncut, and feature the live-action sequences starring Christopher Lloyd (Taxi) and Bill Nye (known for his own TV show, Bill Nye the Science Guy). In addition, you'll also get the following extras:
Drawn to the Future: New interview with creator/writer Bob Gale and writer John Ludin.
Galleries: Rare archival materials featuring character art, DeLorean designs and more.
On the same date they are releasing the TV show by itself, Universal will also release Back to the Future - The Complete Animated Series DVDs as part of Back to the Future - The Complete Adventures. That title will include all 3 theatrical films, The Complete Animated Series television show (all 26 episodes), and a "Bonus Disc with More than 2 Hours of Content"...content which actually includes two episodes of the animated series ("Brothers" and "Mac the Black"). So that part is redundant, but why? Because whether you buy the 9-disc DVD version ($88.88 SRP) of The Complete Adventures or the 8-disc Blu-ray version ($99.88 SRP) of that title, you're really just getting The Complete Animated Series on 4 DVDs bundled together with the 5-DVD or 4-BD set of the 30th Anniversary Trilogy...all three movies, with bonus material on either 2 DVDs or 1 BD. And that those extras on the movie Trilogy set include two episodes of the TV show as a sampler to folks who got the Trilogy alone, rather than The Complete Adventures. Try to entice them to buy The Complete Animated Series, if they haven't already.
Below is the package art for Back to the Future - The Complete Animated Series, followed by Blu-ray and DVD package art for Back to the Future - The Complete Adventures. On those, we've got both a close-up look at the collectible light-up "Flux Capacitor" packaging, and then a "beauty shot" of the package's contents. Note that the Blu-ray edition of Back to the Future - The Complete Adventures mentions "Digital HD" on the front cover, but all indications from the studio are that these UltraViolet digital copies are for the 3 theatrical films, and not for the television episodes.
