'The Walking Dead': Who will die? (And other fearless finale theories)

Yay! Me made it to Terminus! Sooooooooo…what now? And what is Terminus anyway? And who might not make it out of the season alive? Now presenting: a few fearless theories as to what may happen on Sunday’s season 4 finale of The Walking Dead.

Remember that famous episode of The Twilight Zonewhere some aliens come down and say they want to take humans to show them their planet. And then the humans decipher the title of the book one of the aliens is carrying as “To Serve Man,” and say “Awwww, isn’t that sweet. They do want to help us.” One problem: IT WAS A FREAKIN’ COOKBOOK!

Could our survivors be walking into a similar trap at Terminus, only this time it is fellow humans doing the cooking…and eating? Well, for one thing, that was a pretty big grill kindly-seeming Mary was tending to when Glenn and company arrived. Also, let us not forget that after fleeing the prison in the comic book, Rick and Co. went up against a group of cannibals called The Hunters who kidnapped a dying Dale and unknowingly chomped on his infected leg. (Surprise!)

Food is getting scarce in the apocalypse so this could be the natural next step in that gnarly progression. But there are other questions about Terminus. Like, why the hell is the gate unlocked so any old zombie can just stroll right in? And why was there nobody there to take the group’s weapons, as mandated on the sign? Clearly some mysteries still to be unraveled here. Let’s just hope the plate of food Mary offered them wasn’t…you know, Beth.

Daryl Will Have To Make a Choice
Daryl has seemingly accepted his “outdoor cat” label and joined Joe and his band of no-so-merry marauders. He knows they are tracking some dude who killed one of their buddies. He does not know the dude they are tracking is Rick. Clearly, it appears we are being set up for some sort of confrontation where Daryl will either have to make a choice between the two sides or figure out how to keep his former prison buddy safe. Can he just put a “claim” on Rick and have that be that? Not likely.

Rick Is In For a Tough Night
Jesus, can this guy EVER catch a break? Here’s what Robert Kirkman told me about Rick in the finale: “This is Rick Grimes being pushed to his absolute limit. And if you think you’ve seen that before, you haven’t.” You mean his best friend screwing his wife, having to kill his best friend, his wife dying during childbirth, his son having to shoot his wife in the head to prevent her from coming back as a zombie, popular tv series on dvd, him watching his mentor be executed, him being beaten within an inch of his life by the Governor, and him believing his baby daughter is dead is NOT being pushed to the absolute limit? Well, then this dude has a hell of a limit.

Someone Will Die
The Walking Dead actually does not tend to kill major characters in its finales. Yes, Andrea bought it in last year’s season-ender, but more often than not it is someone less vital (Jacqui in season 1, Jimmy and Patricia in season 2) that gets offed. That could very well be the case here. But seeing as how Hershel is the only series regular to hit the afterlife this season, and that this is a show that lends itself to a high turnover rate, one can’t help but get the sneaky suspicion that someone from the main group will not be making it to season 5. If that were to happen, here are some of the leading candidates:

BOB
He is haunted by the fact that every group he joins dies, leaving him as the last man standing. What better way to stop that vicious cycle than by sacrificing himself so his current outfit might live? Actually, on second thought, there are about a million better ways to stop that vicious cycle, but it would be a poetic ending for Mr. Stookey nonetheless.

BETH
Could she be dead already? Could someone from Terminus have driven her off in that car and grilled her up under my cannibals theory from above? Doubtful only because the Greene family has already suffered their big loss of the season. How much misery can one family handle?

CAROL
She has proven to have a zero tolerance policy towards protecting the group. Could that mean making herself expendable to ensure the others’ safety? Perhaps, but Carol has had so many big episodes this season, it may be time for another character to shine.

SASHA
Sasha is probably the least-cooked character at this point in terms of development. She had some nice scenes when she got sick, and again the other week when she broke off from Bob and Maggie, but she still hasn’t made a major impact. On one hand, that could make her vulnerable, But we know showrunner Scott Gimple likes to give his characters some emotional context before lowering the boom, so he may feel more work needs to be done with Sasha before she meets her terrible fate.

RICK
It makes no sense for so many reasons. He’s the man that started us on this journey. He’s the face of the franchise. He’s still alive and kicking in the comic book. But have the producers been stealthily readying us for this moment by making Rick so scarce the past few weeks? Other than one quick scene on the railroad tracks, Rick has basically been MIA for the past month since we last saw him hiding under a bed. Have producers merely been weaning us off our hero before shutting him down for good. They wouldn’t. Would they…?

Get Ready For a Cliffhanger
The Walking Dead doesn’t really do cliffhangers. I mean, at the end of season 2 they introduced us to Michonne and showed us a shot of the prison in the distance, but there was nothing left hanging that kept us freaking out all summer long wondering if so-and-so was going to survive. Judging by what Robert Kirkman told me recently, that may not be the case this time. Check out Kirkman’s quote: “The anticipation for the next season after this finale is unfortunately going to be a lot more heightened than it has been between any other season. So it’s going to be a rough summer for Walking Dead fans waiting for us to come back in the fall.”

To me, that reads like the season could end with someone (or some people) in serious peril and we will possibly be left hanging as to their safety until the show returns in October. Who is that person and what is that peril? No idea. But we may have all summer to let it sink in. What are you theories for what will happen — and who may die — in the season 4 Walking Dead finale?
